Beer and health
Yahoo News 18/10/01 and the Express (19/10/01) report on a conference held in Brussels last week by the Brewers of Europe. Apparently, beer drunk in moderation can help protect again heart disease, cancer and osteoporosis. Scientists attribute the health beneficial effects to its content of vitamins, soluble fibre, silicon and polyphenolic antioxidant compounds. Beer contains several B vitamins including B12, B6 and folate derived from the barley used to make beer. Soluble fibre from barley cells walls may be effective in reducing cholesterol levels. Beer is also a good source of bioavailable silicon extracted from the orthosilic acid in malt during the mashing process. Xanthohumol is a prenylated chalcone found in hops whose protective effects against a range of conditions including osteroporosis, cardiovascular disease and cancer have been extensively researched (Piendl-A; Biendl-M. Brauwelt-; 140 (13/14) 526, 539-543). Professor Denis De Keukleleire, Head of the Laboratory of Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry at the University of Ghent, points out that traditionally hops have been used in sedatives and sleep-inducing formulations, to combat stress, to treat complaints related to the menopause, for stimulation of the gut as well as for their anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. Further notes on the healthy properties of beer together with literature references can be found on the Brewers of Europe (CBMC) website.
